Yonkers Rep. Engel Joins Lowey In Announcing Opposition To Iran Deal

WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. – Rep. Eliot Engel (D-Westchester) echoed earlier comments from fellow Democratic representative Nita Lowey, and voiced his opposition to the recently completed nuclear deal with Iran.

Congressman Eliot Engel (D-16th) released a statement disagreeing with the recent Iran nuclear deal signed by President Obama.

Engel is the leading Democrat on the House Committee on Foreign Affairs and the Congressman for the 16th District, which covers Yonkers, Rye and Pelham.

“At the outset, I was troubled that Iran was not asked to stop enriching despite the fact that there were several separate UN Security Council resolutions compelling them to do so,” Engel said in a statement released on Thursday.

“I have raised questions and concerns throughout the negotiating phase and review period. The answers I’ve received simply don’t convince me that this deal will keep a nuclear weapon out of Iran’s hands, and may in fact strengthen Iran’s position as a destabilizing and destructive influence across the Middle East.”

Specific concerns in Engel's statement include lack of access for inspectors and easing of sanctions, with a word of warning about Iran being a 'legitimized nuclear threshold state' in 15 years.

“I still believe that a negotiated solution is the best course of action. That’s the path I believe we should pursue,” Engel notes.

Lowey, congresswoman for the 17th District, was another prominent area Democrat who came out against the deal, noting that the deal lacked 'sufficient safeguards' in a statement released earlier last week.
